Learn to Love Your Smile

 In Uncategorised

The modern world can be a discouraging place to live in. The rise of photoshop and social media means that people are losing confidence over their appearance every day, as all they see when they log in to Facebook or Instagram are a plethora of pictures and selfies showing people with unrealistically toned bodies and white smiles. Everyone seems to be in competition with each other to see who can get the most validation in the form of ‘likes’ from their friends, and when they see others doing better than themselves, their self-esteem plummets. This has led to record numbers of people becoming dissatisfied with their appearance, especially their teeth and smile- in fact, a recent nationwide poll has found that over 50% of Brits feel anxious about how their smile looks.

The investigation (which was conducted on behalf of the Oral Health Foundation) discovered that television and social media are the biggest culprits when it comes to poor self-image, with a third of us being made to feel inadequate from these sources. The media isn’t the only thing to blame, however. 17% of us have received negative comments from family members about their smile- and other bad influences include comments from partners (14%), friends (13%) and colleagues (9%). All these statistics make one thing clear- as a whole, we are being too unkind to each other about our smiles. There’s enough pressure from the media to obtain unrealistic standards without us criticising each other- and smiling is incredibly important for our self-esteem and mental health in general.

We should make it clear that we aren’t saying you shouldn’t want a better smile- having straight, white teeth is a known confidence booster, and so many people’s lives have changed for the better after having cosmetic dentistry. But if someone is happy with their smile the way it is and they have good oral health, they shouldn’t be made to feel like they are somehow inadequate for not conforming to harmful societal norms perpetuated by the media.

This is the message National Smile Month is trying to convey. Smiling communicates a sign of friendship, trust and acceptability, having significant impacts on our relationships, careers and social life. Far too many of us are hiding our smile because we feel uncomfortable with its appearance, but owning a beautiful smile is about more than just aesthetics. Having a clean mouth, strong teeth and healthy gums are so much more important than the colour or shape of our teeth!

However, if you feel that cosmetic dentistry would greatly benefit you through raising your self-esteem and confidence, our team at Strand on the Green Dental Practice would be more than happy to help. We perform countless state-of-the-art procedures to improve the smiles of our patients. Today, there are a variety of techniques and options to treat teeth that are discoloured, chipped, misshapen or missing.
